Do Pomeranians Shed?

We all adore our fluffy Pomeranians, but let's be real – those seasonal coat changes can lead to a flurry of shedding! While Poms aren't typically year-round major shedders with consistent grooming, the transition from warm to cold (and vice versa) can bring on a significant increase in loose fur. At OC Pom Rescue, we've learned how to navigate these seasonal fluff surges and keep our Poms (and our homes!) looking their best.

Understanding the Seasonal Shed:

Pomeranians have a double coat designed to regulate their body temperature. As the seasons change, they shed their old coat to make way for a new one. This is especially noticeable when transitioning from summer to winter and winter to summer.

1. Prepping for the Shed: Proactive Brushing is Key

Instead of reacting to the shedding, let's be proactive!

  • Increased Brushing Frequency: During seasonal transitions, increase your brushing to daily or every other day. This will help remove loose fur before it ends up on your furniture.

    • Slicker Brush (Quality): A good slicker brush, like the Chris Christensen Slicker Brush, is invaluable during these times.

    • Undercoat Rake (Seasonal Use): An undercoat rake, like this one, helps remove the heavier undercoat shed.

  • Detangling Spray (Prevent Mats): Use a detangling spray, such as this natural detangling spray, before brushing to prevent mats from forming during heavy shedding.

2. Bathing for Shedding Relief:

A bath during the peak of shedding can help loosen and remove a lot of fur.

  • Shedding-Specific Shampoos: Consider using a de-shedding shampoo designed to loosen hair. A gentle, hypoallergenic dog shampoo helps to avoid irritating their skin. We've had good results with Oatmeal based dog shampoos.

  • Thorough Rinse and Dry: Ensure you rinse all shampoo thoroughly and dry your Pom completely. A blow dryer on a low setting can help remove even more loose hair.

  • Conditioner for Coat Health: Use a good conditioner to keep their coat healthy and hydrated.

3. Dietary Support for Coat Health:

A healthy coat sheds less.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Ensure their diet is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Supplements can also be beneficial. Just Food For Dogs has a variety of nutrient-rich meals designed to specifically benefit skin and coat health.

  • Hydration: Always provide fresh water to keep their skin and coat hydrated.

4. Professional Grooming During Seasonal Peaks:

A professional groomer can be a lifesaver during these times.

  • De-Shedding Treatments: Schedule a de-shedding treatment with a groomer experienced with Pomeranians.

  • Coat Trimming: A light trim can help manage the shedding.

5. Home Management During Seasonal Shedding:

  • Frequent Vacuuming: Vacuum daily during peak shedding.

  • Lint Rollers and Furniture Covers: Keep these handy for quick cleanup.

  • Air Purifiers: Use air purifiers to catch airborne fur.

The OC Pom Rescue Seasonal Shedding Strategy:

With a proactive approach and a little extra care during seasonal changes, you can minimize the shedding and keep your Pom’s coat looking its best.
